Instagram has approximately 400 million users as of 2016, which is insane! What's even crazier is to think that it was through this social media platform that I found my new go-to baker when I'm in NYC: BK Floral Delight, or as I now know her as, Jiahn.
Let's back up - I was scanning through my Instagram feed one day when I came across one of my favorite jewelry vendors, Catbird. On their post for the day, they had the most beautiful cake that was not made out of fondant that I had ever seen!

I instantly became obsessed. For anyone that knows me, especially those who have worked with me in the past, they are aware by how much I love to bake. I love to eat sweets, but I love making desserts even more. The root of this love probably comes from the fact that I really enjoy chemistry and baking is a chemist's game. If you're off on your measurements, your souffle will implode, meringue won't stiffen, buttercream frosting will look like curdled milk (yuck that's the worst, thinking about it makes me want to vomit), etc. You get the picture right?
Was my cake above delicious? Yes. But compared to Jiahn, my buttercream skills are at a BEGINNERS LEVEL compared to this icing all-star. After admiring her cake creations on insta for a good 10 minutes, I decided to reach out to her via the email address she had listed on her profile (firstname.lastname@example.org).
She was quick to respond to me and provided me with the different cake & pricing options that she offers. These are not supermarket cakes you can get for $9.99, so don't be shocked by the pricing. You get what you paid for: beautiful pieces of art that taste just as delicious as they look. It's worth it.
I decided to order one dozen cupcakes from her to gift to my two friends: Elizabeth Greenwood (college bff/author of "Playing Dead") and Alex Do, one of my nearest and dearest friends who let me crash at his fabulous apartment in Hell's Kitchen. FYI: I was in NYC for Liz's book launch :P
So, I decide to pick up the cupcakes on Tuesday since I was having lunch with Liz in Brooklyn at Rucola before her big event. When I arrived, Jiahn greeted me with a big smile and brought three boxes: 2 boxes of 6, which I ordered and 1 special cupcake just for me!
As you all know, I am always curious to know the story behind a dish/recipe, so of course I asked Jiahn how she got into the cupcake business.
She is originally from Korea and came to NYC as a jewelry designer. She had grown tired of doing that, but always loved to bake. She then took her artistic abilities, design skills & love for baked goods and quit and her job and launched her baking company: BK Floral Delight where she specializes in buttercream floral designed cupcakes and cakes.
Motivating right? Definitely motivates me to pursue my dreams and reach my goals! If you're in NYC, definitely reach out to Jiahn and place an order.
The frosting is not too sweet and is the perfect consistency. It is not runny and not too firm I feel like I'm eating a block of sugar butter from the freezer. The cake is weirdly dense but fluffy. Overall, these were worth every.damn.dollar.spent.
